"I HATE MEN looking at me and thinking what they think," fumes Lynda Carter, "and I know what they think" (you don't have to be a mind reader, below). But the luscious 38-20-37 Lynda got a jump start on her career when, clad in a swimsuit, she marched in front of millions...

After touring with a rock and roll group, Lynda searched for a modeling job. Her agency, a sponsor of the Miss USA contest, suggested she enter the pageant. Although skeptical, Lynda agreed. Three days later she won the Miss Arizona contest. Two weeks after that, she was chosen to represent the U.S. (bottom left) in the Miss World Pageant. "My head was swollen. I thought I was hot," confesses Lynda. Her inflated ego prompted her mother to admit that Lynda was "intolerable to live with."

She recalls the Q&A portion of the Miss World contest: "My big question was, 'Do you think the institution of marriage will die out in the next decade?' At that time I was pretty cynical and could have given them a really smart answer, but I wanted to win, so I gave them what I thought they wanted to hearthat love and marriage were part of the American tradition and would always remain so." Lynda went home as first runner-up (top left).

She was nearly broke, and on the verge of being evicted, when she won the Wonder Woman role over 2,000 other auditioners (right, with her "V" for victory clearly outlined). As the "starspangled, bouncy-breasted" heroine, she earned a profusion of glamour titles; "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World" (Academy of Beauty & The London Press Organizationl, one of the "10 Most Exciting Women in the World" (The International Bachelors' Association}, et al.

Lynda's beautiful lifestyle has been blemished by the possible indictment of her second husband, Robert Altman. Altman, a high-powered Washington, D.C. lawyer, has been implicated in an international banking scandal with his mentor Clark Clifford. In the meantime, loyal Lynda is trying to disavow her "sex symbol" image: "I never meant to be a sexual object for anyone but my husband. I should not exploit what God has created." When reminded about her best-selling 1980 cheesecake poster, Lynda claims: "When I posed for it, I never thought a picture of my body would be tacked up in men's bedrooms." At last report, Lynda was promoting her latest TV movie, Posing: the former Miss USA, posing in "a lacy next-to-nothing," played a "bareall" Mom who is photographed for a centerfold.

Crowning Achievements

Born: July 24, 1951 Phoenix, Arizona.

"I wouldn't do it today," insists Lynda regarding her nudity in Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw (facing, bottom right). "I don't think anygrown-up woman feels comfortable about being exploited." The bosomy brunette, who became a born-again Christian just 2 years after making the 1976 movie, explains, "For a time, all my values were distorted. I was alone and vulnerable at the time. It's something I did and it's something I learned a big lesson from." Lynda further charges that she was "a fool to let fast-talking Hollywood types lead me down the garden path."

Mark Lester, Bobbie Jo's director, today recalls the torrid lovemaking scene where Lynda was required to shed her clothes and inhibitions (above and below). "I was really taken aback when she made it seem she was pressured or led astray," laughs Lester, "that's ridiculous. People can change their minds later and say, 'I'm a Christian now, I don't believe in doing that.' But to place the blame on some body is ridiculous. I've read interviews where she claims I told her she would be a star if she did nude scenes. That just wasn't the case. I talked to her before the filming. She took the part knowing the scenes were in there, and she didn't have any problem at all with doing them. I don't think any of her work since is as-good as her acting in Bobbie Jo." But at least she's now married to a potential "Outlaw"...
